Sexual assault is a crime that harms our Service Members, erodes our readiness, and hinders our ability to field the ready force that the National Defense Strategy requires. Deciding whether to report a sexual assault is a deeply personal decision; however, reporting can be a gateway to recovery. The DoD’s Unrestricted Reporting and Restricted Reporting options allow Service members who experience sexual assault to exercise control over how and when they engage with helping resources.

Helping a Victim

As a Friend

  • Start by believing, not blaming
  • Ensure physical safety; encourage medical care if needed
  • If recent incident, discourage showering, eating, or disposing of clothing
  • Encourage contacting the SAPR hotline for timely information and the options to report

As a Supervisor

  • You are a mandatory reporter of incidents affecting a subordinate
  • Contact SARC for assistance with your reporting responsibilities
  • It is your Commander’s responsibility to determine who has “need to know,” so do not further disseminate without guidance
  • In coordination with, and as directed by, your commander, monitor the well-being of the victim
  • Encourage contacting the SAPR hotline for timely information and the options to report

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer victim advocate and supporting victims of sexual assaults, please stop by the SAPR office, call 575-572-1551 or email Jacqueine Ramos at jacquerline.ramos@us.af.mil. Be on the lookout for an upcoming Townhall meeting for anyone interested who may have more questions.
